Actimel and the environment
Working hard to protect the environment
At Actimel, we think being kind to the environment is as important as promoting an active lifestyle. That’s why we take steps to make our operations that little bit greener. After all, the perfect start your day today shouldn’t come at the environment’s expense tomorrow.
Less packaging

Since 2000, we have been working to reduce the weight and amount of packaging we use. In that time we have decreased the weight of Actimel bottles by 50% - from 11g to 5.5g – and we’re still looking for ways to make them even lighter. What’s more, our bottles are made of a plastic called HDPE which is collected and recycled by most local authorities. And the pick-up that holds our bottles is made of flat cardboard which is widely recycled across the UK.

Less energy
A big focus of ours is to reduce our energy and water consumption at factory level. So we recycle energy wherever we can. Many of our factory processes reuse steam, water and heat energy.
Less transport

Changing our production methods has had a really positive impact on our carbon footprint. By packaging our products on site we reduce the amount of transport we use to distribute Actimel, cutting CO2 emissions as we go.
Less pollution
Our improved water treatment techniques remove noise pollution and unpleasant odours. They make for cleaner water too.
Looking to the future
As we continue to bring Actimel to happy customers across the UK we are committed to further minimising our impact on the environment. That’s why Danone has recently added its name to the Courtauld Commitment. In doing so, we have pledged to work with WRAP (the Waste and Resource Action Programme) and other manufacturers to reduce the impact of packaging and wastage across the food supply chain.
